This means those over 50 face a constant battle to stay socially connected, while at the same time loneliness is worse for a senior’s health than obesity or smoking. Someone who is over 60 and lonely is 45% more likely to die in the next 12 months, and 64% more likely to develop dementia, than someone with good social connections. The US Surgeon General now says loneliness has as big a health impact as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
